Critical Software Engineering

Summary: As systems become more and more distributed and embedded in society so does the complexity and criticality of the failure modes, locations and consequences. By understanding the social, software and distributed systems issues of critical systems graduates will have a unique and valuable set of skills for developing such systems.

Typical entry requirements: Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, at least a 2nd class honours degree in Computer Science or a closely related discipline or its equivalent from overseas universities. Applicants who do not meet this criteria but who have significant industrial experience will also be considered subject to individual circumstances.

Other Dept Info: The Computing Department at Lancaster is one of Europe's premier Computer Science Departments and was rated 5 (excellent) in the most recent (2001) Research Assessment Exercise. The lecturing staff is composed entirely of people who are recognised national and international experts in their field. This means that our degree courses are bang up to date, challenging and fun. We have an excellent self-contained environment currently comprising eight dedicated teaching laboratories for the exclusive use of Computer Science students 24 hours a day. These are equipped with powerful, modern computers and are served by a state-of-the-art network infrastructure.

Advanced Computer Science

Summary: The overall aim of the programme is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and in-depth technical understanding of the key concepts required to design and build systems. In particular, graduates are equipped with the skills needed to understand, develop and apply current and future technologies. The programme produces graduates capable of working effectively in a professional software and systems development environment, at all stages of the product life-cycle. Graduates are likely to find employment in the broadcasting, telecommunications, consultancy, manufacturing and service sectors with many IT companies seeing networked systems as a principal route for future expansion.

The course is particularly suited to professional computer scientists wishing to gain a high level qualification to further their career. The full choice of modules for part-time students makes this course particularly suited to those with timetabling constraints or those whose choice of modules lies outside our specialist pathways. You are encouraged to choose a project dissertation topic relevant to at least one of your chosen modules as well as to your current employment.
